WHEN OFF-THE-SHELF DOESN'T FIT

Off-the-shelf tools are built
for the average problem.
Yours isn't average.

The software market is optimized for the median use case. Every product on the market was designed around a pattern of common problems, then packaged for the broadest possible customer base. If your problem fits that pattern, off-the-shelf works. If it doesn't, you spend more time working around the software than you do working with it.

The signs are recognizable. You're using three tools where one should do the job. You have a team member whose main job is moving data between systems that should talk to each other. You've tried two AI vendors for the same problem and neither can handle your specific data structure. You have a workflow that's partly automated and partly a spreadsheet because nothing can do both.

Custom Builds & Integration is built for this situation. It is not a product. It is not a template. It is full-service engineering against your exact problem, scoped before anything is built, delivered with full code ownership, and designed to be maintained by your team without a dependency on ours.

This is also distinct from our marketplace tools. Marketplace is self-serve — off-the-shelf components you can configure. Custom Builds is bespoke engineering when the components don't exist.

WHAT WE BUILD

Six types of custom builds.
All from a blank scope.

These are the categories of custom work we most commonly build. If your problem doesn't fit any of them, that's fine — the discovery process exists specifically for problems that don't fit categories.

Build Type 01
Custom Platforms
End-to-end platform development for internal tools, client-facing applications, and operational systems that need to exist but don't fit any product category. Built to your exact specification with full code handover.
Build Type 02
AI Pipelines
Custom AI data pipelines that connect your specific data sources, apply domain-specific logic, and produce outputs that reach the people and systems that need them — not a generic dashboard, but actionable intelligence built for your operations.
Build Type 03
System Integration
When two systems that need to talk to each other don't have a native integration path, we build the bridge. API design, data transformation, event orchestration, and validation — engineered to be maintainable, not fragile.
Build Type 04
MSIL-Powered Intelligence
Custom intelligence deployments built on MSIL. When your AI use case requires domain-specific decision logic, custom data flows, and operating rules that no off-the-shelf AI product can accommodate — we build it to spec.
Build Type 05
Workflow Automation
Complex multi-step workflow automation that connects people, systems, and decisions in sequences that off-the-shelf automation tools can't handle. Built for reliability, not demo appeal.
Build Type 06
Reporting & Analytics Infrastructure
Custom reporting and analytics pipelines that give leadership the specific view of the business they need — not the view that came with the software they purchased. Connected to real data, updated in real time.
HOW A CUSTOM BUILD RUNS

Five phases from
scope to handover.

Every custom build engagement follows the same five-phase structure. The phases are fixed. The scope inside each phase is completely custom. Nothing proceeds to the next phase until the current phase has been reviewed and approved.

This isn't a bureaucratic process. It exists because the most expensive thing in software engineering is building the wrong thing and discovering it late. Every phase exists to reduce the cost of changing direction — and to ensure that what's delivered at the end is what was agreed at the beginning.

Timeline varies by scope. Simple integrations can complete in 4–6 weeks. Complex platform builds typically run 12–20 weeks. We establish the timeline during discovery, after we understand the actual problem — not before.

1
Phase 01 — Discovery & Scoping
Understand before you build
Every custom build starts with a structured discovery process. We document what you're building, why you're building it, what it needs to do that existing tools don't, and what existing systems it needs to connect to. Discovery produces a scope document and architecture proposal that defines everything before a line of code is written.
Scope document · Architecture proposal · Effort estimate
2
Phase 02 — Architecture Design
Design for the outcome, not the technology
Architecture is designed for your specific requirements — your data environment, your infrastructure constraints, your compliance requirements, and your team's ability to maintain what we build. We don't template architecture to a reference stack. We design it to your situation and get it approved before build begins.
Architecture diagrams · Technology decisions · Integration specifications
3
Phase 03 — Build & Integration
Ship working software, not demos
Build is executed against the approved scope and architecture. We use sprint-based delivery with regular demonstrations against acceptance criteria. Integration work runs in parallel with feature development so system connections are tested throughout the build, not after it's done.
Working software · Integration tests passing · Sprint demos
4
Phase 04 — Quality Assurance
Test against your real environment
QA is conducted against your actual data, your actual systems, and your actual operating conditions — not against a staging environment that doesn't reflect reality. We define acceptance criteria during scoping and QA against them rigorously. Nothing ships that hasn't been validated in your environment.
QA reports · Acceptance criteria sign-off · Performance benchmarks
5
Phase 05 — Handover & Support
You leave with everything
Handover includes source code, documentation, architecture diagrams, runbooks, and a structured handover session with your team. We don't hold the keys. After handover, we offer optional support and maintenance engagements — but your team is fully capable of operating and extending what we built.
Source code · Documentation · Runbooks · Handover session
MSIL IN CUSTOM BUILDS

When your build needs
to be intelligent.

Some custom builds are platforms or integrations — engineered software that solves a structural problem. Others need AI capabilities baked in from the start: decision logic that adapts to new data, workflows that trigger based on detected patterns, intelligence that compounds over time.

For custom builds that require AI, we deploy MSIL as the intelligence layer within your custom platform. MSIL provides persistent memory, event-driven action, and boundary-enforced agent execution — all configurable to your specific domain logic and operating rules.

The difference between MSIL in a custom build and an off-the-shelf AI tool is that MSIL runs against your specific data structures, your specific decision criteria, and your specific escalation rules. Off-the-shelf AI tools make generalizing assumptions. Custom builds with MSIL don't generalize — they're engineered for your situation.

If your AI use case requires domain-specific decision logic, custom data flows, or operating rules that no off-the-shelf product can accommodate, this is where custom builds and MSIL converge.

WHAT MSIL ADDS TO A CUSTOM BUILD
Persistent Memory
Every interaction, decision, and outcome remembered and available for future decisions — across sessions, across users, across time.
Event-Driven Action
Intelligence that triggers automatically when data patterns match defined conditions — no prompts, no manual checks, no human lag.
Boundary-Enforced Execution
Every AI action operates within documented rules. Every decision is logged with rationale. Governance is architectural, not optional.
Compounding Intelligence
The longer MSIL runs in your custom build, the more context it accumulates — and the more accurate its decisions become. Intelligence compounds like interest.
FREQUENTLY ASKED

Common questions.

The other solution areas are built around known problem patterns — AI transformation, strategy, migration. Custom Builds is for when your problem doesn't fit a known pattern. It's full-service engineering from a blank scope: we design, build, and hand over whatever you need built, including custom platforms, AI pipelines, and integrations that don't exist off the shelf. The starting point is always discovery — not a product page.
Yes. Full code handover is part of every Custom Builds engagement. You receive the source code, documentation, architecture diagrams, runbooks, and a structured handover session with your team. There is no ongoing licensing dependency on Maxx Stacks unless you choose to engage us for support or further development. You leave with everything.
Scoping is the first deliverable of the engagement. We run a structured discovery process — typically 2–3 weeks — that produces a detailed scope document, architecture proposal, and effort estimate. Nothing is built until the scope is reviewed and approved by your team. If the discovery reveals that an off-the-shelf solution would serve you better, we'll tell you rather than proceed with a custom build you don't need.
Yes. Integration is a core part of every custom build. We assess your existing systems during discovery, design the integration architecture before build begins, and validate every integration point during QA. We build to your environment — not a generic reference architecture. If your existing systems are legacy and present integration challenges, we can scope the integration work as part of the build or recommend pairing this with a migration engagement first.
For custom builds that include AI capabilities, we deploy MSIL as the intelligence layer within your custom platform. MSIL provides persistent memory, event-driven action, and boundary-enforced agent execution — all configured to your specific use case and operating rules. Custom builds with MSIL are designed for outcomes that off-the-shelf AI tools can't deliver because your use case requires custom data flows and domain-specific decision logic that no product ships with.

Ready to build exactly what you need?

Start with discovery. We'll scope it before a line of code is written.
