Natural Language Processing
Reranking
Natural Language Processing· Intermediate
Definition
A second-stage retrieval step that re-orders an initial set of candidate documents by their relevance to a query using a more powerful (but slower) model — typically a cross-encoder. Dramatically improves retrieval quality in RAG systems without the cost of running the expensive model over the full corpus.
