Hybrid Search

Natural Language Processing· Intermediate

Definition

A retrieval approach that combines dense vector search (semantic similarity) with sparse keyword search (BM25/TF-IDF), merging results from both methods. Outperforms either approach alone — capturing exact keyword matches as well as conceptually related results.

Maxx Stacks Context

Maxx Stacks context: MSIL uses hybrid search across enterprise knowledge bases, ensuring retrieval quality on both precise queries (product codes, contract clauses) and conceptual queries.

Enterprise Context

The production standard for enterprise RAG systems. Pure vector search misses exact matches; pure keyword search misses paraphrases. Hybrid captures both.
