Definition
A type of recurrent neural network with gating mechanisms (input, forget, output gates) that allow it to selectively remember and forget information over long sequences — addressing the vanishing gradient problem of basic RNNs. Dominant for sequence modeling before Transformers, still used in time-series and streaming applications.
