Cross-Encoder
Natural Language Processing· Advanced
Definition
A neural architecture that takes a query-document pair as joint input and produces a relevance score. More accurate than bi-encoder (embedding) models for ranking but far slower — making cross-encoders practical only as rerankers on a small candidate set rather than for full-corpus retrieval.
Enterprise Context
Used as the reranking layer in high-precision enterprise retrieval pipelines: legal research, medical literature search, and financial document analysis.
